Folklore, legends and myth
Filipinos have always been daunted by the fairy tales and epics from other lands, and most Filipinos have an inferiority complex about their own. But when one comes to think of it, Filipino folklore is quite rich. The myths and legends of the Philippines are beautiful and plentiful as those of other lands, complemented by the people who have come and influenced the land. The tales depict the charm, depth, and variety of Filipino culture.
Folklore is by and large transmitted by word-of-mouth. Verbal tradition is very common among the indigenous tribes that are still existent in the Philippines. Myths are tales involving the gods of old may deal with a conflict among the gods themselves, or ways in which the gods would reveal themselves as unique characters unto the lowly creatures of the Earth, including, of course, man. Legends of creation usually involve spirits or gods, or just an all-powerful God. At any rate, almost all legends involve a miracle or curse invoked in the name of, or by the hand of, a higher power. Examples of these are the manananggal, the aswang, and the tikbalang. The supernatural involves the fair folk, dwarves, mermaids, demons, strange beasts, and other unnatural phenomena. Tales of divine interference are included here, as they are also classified as unexplainable.
